Discostan, a funky, cross-cultural dance party, takes place every second Wednesday of the month throughout the run of the LA / Islam Arts Initiative (LA/IAI). Featuring Golden-Era Bollywood numbers, Arabic dabke, Balkan brass attacks, male and taraab, silky soukous, and Algerian raï, funk from Turkey, Iran, Thailand, Burma, and Ethiopia, many surprises unfold for your delight on the dancefloor. Resident DJs include Aruna Irani (Sublime Frequencies/Radio Discostan), Gomez Comes Alive (Radio Sombra/Espacio 1839/Discos Inmigrantes), Alky Holovic, and Ají.
Discostan invites Yavaran aka Kamyar Jarahzadeh of Ajam Media Collective to play his favorite classic hits from the western to eastern reaches of the Discostani compass, plus some original remixes that will knock your جوراب off.
Discostan will feature the Qabila Folk Dance Company presenting dances of North Africa, the Levant and the Gulf. Tonight, they will showcase ghawazee and khaleeji pieces from their extensive repertoire, plus give us all a lesson in dabke to heat up the dance floor.
Discostan invites you to get lost in dhamal (ecstatic rhythm and dance). In addition to our usual repertoire from Beirut to Bangkok via Bombay, expect Sufi qawwali, bhangra and other inspired music from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, accompanied by Amit Kotecha and Vinay Sharma on dhol. Also, the debut of performance artists Burqa Girls on the dance floor!
