The MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House hosts an engaging presentation of Istanbul-based architects, SUPERPOOL, who have pursued a number of civic-minded mapping projects in Istanbul, a multi-layered mega-city quite akin to Los Angeles, and throughout Turkey. The progressive work of this pioneering firm offers the opportunity for an L.A. audience to learn more about how SUPERPOOL’s studio—based in a city relevant to nearly every current global debate, and explicitly not producing the type of starchitecture projects to be found in places like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Los Angeles—conceptualizes and operates. SUPERPOOL’s young visionaries include Gurdogan, who is Turkish and educated in Los Angeles, and Thomsen, who is Danish; both worked at Rem Koolhaas’s Rotterdam-based office. The MAK Center/Schindler House develops and supports innovative projects and ideas and provides a platform for current issues in art, architecture and urbanism by encouraging exploration and experimentation.
